About two billion people currently lack access to electric light. Many people use fuel-based lighting (kerosene) which is unhealthy, dangerous and inefficient. Light Up the World Foundation (LUTW) plans to change that. They commissioned students in the Stanford Product Design Program and the Graduate School of Business to not only design a light, but develop a sustainable business model that would bring economic benefit to developing countries. The Mighty Light is a final design that represents 10 weeks worth of research, prototyping, long-distance need-finding, and user testing. It is comprised of a solar panel, 1W super bright white LEDs (pre-market production) and a unique form that answers users' needs. It poses no health risks, and provides more light than any other LED currently on the market. The Mighty Light is currently being produced by several members of the team at a company called Ignite Innovations Incorporated - www.igniteinnovations.com . |
